Sam is the lucky winner!

For all of you who are unfamiliar about king cakes: they bake a plastic baby into the king cake and the one who finds it has to buy the king cake next time. Sam found it. It is supposed to be symbolic of Christ and Easter, somehow I think. It reminded me of when I was growing up and Mom would make cherry pie for us and my brother Mike would be the one who would find the pit everytime.

King Cake for Mardi Gras

I brought a King cake home tonight for a special treat. It is a traditional dessert for Mardi Gras and it tastes alot like a cinnamon roll with frosting. I thought Sam was going to get just a few beads for everyone to wear, but he sure brought alot. We have boxes and boxes of them in his closet, from previous Mardi Gras parades.

What's on your "bucket list"?

I went to see the new Rob Reiner film, "The Bucket List" on Friday with two friends of mine. Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman play men who are shocked to learn that they're dying of cancer. They then spend the rest of the movie travelling around the world trying to experience the things they want to do before they "kick the bucket". This got me thinking about the value of thinking about your life before you are told that you are terminally ill. I think the reason that I liked the movie so much is that, in seeing so many people/patients who come through our Cancer Treatment Center who have wasted their time with unimportant things in life. Dreams deferred are dreams denied. Although the movie was an unrealistic picture of chemotherapy and the trips they took were very expensive, it was well worth seeing. I plan to go see it again when Dick can go as well. Anyway, I am rambling. I just wanted to say how important it is to live like it's your last day. I want those people in my life to know how much they mean to me and how much I love them.

Busy week

Well, it has been one of those weeks at work and at home. It has just been busier than usual. I have just completed training of the new nurse at work, and will go back to the chemo area on Monday. I have been away since the end of October and have really missed it. Looking forward to it. Kyle has started track practice with the team this week and we haven't seen him as much. Dick had class both Tues and Wed nights, and had to go to a different campus 1 hour East of us. He got home both nights late and it is hard to get up and go to work the next morning. Graduate school and full time work do not mix, unfortunately. I am off today and hope to meet some friends for lunch. More later.

Crawfish season begins!

We love our crawfish around our house. Our favorite place to get them is a little place called "Crawfish Hole #2". We drive 45 minutes to just go out to eat there. It is so funny to me that we love them so much. Ten years ago when we moved to Louisiana, I never would've dreamed that we would grow to love them. We had a good weekend. The funniest thing happened yesterday on Saturday AM. Kyle and Sam were still asleep at 8:00 AM when the youth pastor from our church arrived unannounced to wake them up with a camera crew. He had woken up several (12 or so) of their friends and all of them came to get them up. They made a video of the kids being awakened. They were supposed to have brought doughnuts, but they were all eaten by the time the group came to our house. It was funny to see all the teenagers in their sleep clothes startling Kyle and Sam. They loved it.

Mardi Gras season begins this month

Here is a picture of Sam and his best friend Stephen, last year after the Krewe of Highland parade. They had so many beads and throws that we had to get this picture.

A Depressing week around our house

Well, I have finally brought myself to begin to blog again. The National Championship game loss hit us hard on Monday night. It has been hard to be in the middle of LSU country. We had a great turnout at our party Monday night. We enjoyed ourselves and had a houseful of friends and their kids. Ohio State was outplayed by LSU. We still love 'em.

Sad night for Ohio State

What's "high" in the middle and round on both ends?

Yes, My fellow buckeye fans have finally invaded Louisiana for tomorrow's big game. I am so excited for the game. I am wearing my Ohio State shirt under my uniform tomorrow. Kyle will be home at midnight tonight from Colorado. He had a great time. Back to school for the boys tomorrow.

Making Candy buckeyes

We heard from Kyle last night, he is still in Colorado, skiing. He is now skiing on the intermediate trails! He assures me that he now knows how to stop! He leaves Sunday and will be home Monday in time for half a day of school.
Of course the BCS Championship game is Monday in New Orleans. The #1 Ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (and my alma mater) are matched against LSU. We are having a football party at our house with friends, so I am making Candy Buckeyes today. These were a favorite last year at our National Championship party last year (OSU vs. Florida).
Dick is having to work a half day at the plant today. Sam is bowling this afternoon, and Nate is still sleeping (its almost noon). I will probably get to organizing my cupboards later today; they really need it. More later, stay tuned sports fans.

Skier Kyle calls home

We heard from Kyle last night. They made the drive to Keystone,CO fine. He skiied half of the day yesterday and did very well. He said that part that he is having trouble with is STOPPING. He said he has fallen 16 times, but is doing well, and he doesn't think he needs a ski lesson. He is sounding well, and is enjoying his time with his friends. Nate is back from New Orleans/Sugar Bowl, and is out with friends to see a movie tonight. Dick and I have been working.

Kyle getting ready to ski

Here's another picture of Kyle with his ski garb. I talked to him a few hours ago by phone. They are still driving their way to Colorado. They plan to hit the slopes tomorrow. We had a nice visit with friends last night for New Year's. It was nice to be off work today.
